Low Tide in the Middle of Winter
This season has been a weird one. After visiting Niseko over the last 15 years and living here full time for the past 11 i have never seen such a sight in the middle of February.
Looking back at the snow reports on 360niseko in 2012 on the 17th of February they had recorded 1,279cm of accumulative snowfall. A year ago today 842.5cm and this season we are sitting at 526cm. Last week the local paper in Kutchan reported that the town has 70% less snow than average. Is the weather changing for good? How will this effect tourism in the area….time will tell. The season isn’t over yet by a long way but unless we get a radical change in the prevailing weather patterns the writing may be on the wall…or in the snow as it feels like spring. A weird season indeed.
